Starting out the simplest target stand is often made from a simple 8' long 2x4 found at your hardware store. If you cut it into four equal lengths, you build a functional stand using two segments as the center with the others as support. Provide enough gap to allow standard 1x2 furring strips to be place in the gap to support your target and you have a functional target stand that will last years with proper care. It's best to use 3" screws for attachment as they tend to hold up under the normal wear and tear experienced at matches.
If your club has access to a welder, stands can also be made in a similar manner using tube steel and angle iron. This is a great solution as it in much more permanent and has the ability to be staked down more easily. In addition, these take up significantly less space when storing.
