Basic Stage Design

Designing a USPSA stage is both a creative and technical process. A well-designed stage challenges competitors, rewards skill, and runs safely and efficiently. This section outlines key principles to consider when creating a successful stage, whether you're planning a quick speed shoot or a complex field course.

Core Skills to Test

A good USPSA stage should test at least one (but ideally more) of the fundamental shooting skills:

Speed

Short courses and speed shoots place a premium on fast movement, quick sight acquisition, and efficient transitions.

Accuracy

You can emphasize accuracy by:

  • Using long-range targets
  • Incorporating partial targets or no-shoots
  • Lowering the hit factor (e.g., longer distance between targets or fewer total points available)

Shooting on the Move

Stages that require shooting while moving are useful for separating shooters by skill level and add a dynamic, fun element.

Gun Handling

Test competitors with:

  • Mandatory reloads
  • Unusual or awkward start positions
  • Strong-hand or weak-hand only shooting

Stage Planning

Freestyle stages that allow for multiple viable shooting solutions reward strong mental planning. Memory stages are another way to test a shooter’s ability to recall and execute under pressure.

Safety and Rule Compliance

All stages must adhere to the current USPSA rulebook. Safety is non-negotiable and should be considered throughout every stage of design.

  • Never allow targets to be engaged beyond the 180-degree line
  • Avoid trip hazards and unsafe footing
  • Use steel and hard cover at or beyond minimum safe distances
  • Ensure scoring and round count rules are followed (e.g., steel only scored in Comstock)

Range Officer Considerations

Stage design should support RO safety and efficiency:

  • Avoid narrow passages or obstacles that trap ROs during stage flow
  • In retreat stages, give the RO time to move behind the shooter by requiring the shooter to complete an action at the start (e.g., engage targets or retrieve gear from a table)

Characteristics of a Good Stage

Great stages don’t all look the same, but they usually share these qualities:

  • Clear challenge: Each stage should emphasize one or more skills clearly
  • Options: Allow multiple ways to solve the stage—different paths, start/stop points, engagement orders
  • Consistency: Use reliable props that work every time, such as properly calibrated steel or activators that fire without fail
  • Engagement: Whether a fast "hoser" stage or a complex memory stage, good design keeps competitors engaged and excited

What to Avoid

Poorly designed stages can frustrate competitors and pose safety risks. Avoid:

  • Unsafe designs that allow (or require) 180 breaks
  • Steel placed too close to shooters
  • Unreliable props or activators
  • Overly complex challenges that combine multiple difficult tasks at once (e.g., shooting from a balance beam with one hand while carrying a prop)

A successful stage is safe, fair, and fun. With careful planning and attention to detail, your stage can enhance the competitor experience and improve the quality of your match.
